Anthony Joshua Reiterates on Provocative ‘Kill’ Comments Towards Jake Paul

Anthony Joshua and Jake Paul face off
The YouTuber-turned-boxer faces a considerable challenge against former heavyweight champion AJ.

Anthony Joshua stood by his much-discussed comments about wanting to “kill” Jake Paul during a press event in Florida on Wednesday.

These statements were originally stated on the previous day when Joshua was questioned if he would show restraint against Paul, responding that “if I can kill you, I'll kill”.

The upcoming bout against the internet personality turned fighter has drawn debate over safety concerns and the size difference between the two fighters.

Tyson Fury Calls AJ a “Classless Loser”

Former titleholder Tyson Fury branded Anthony Joshua a “disgrace” for his inflammatory rhetoric.

But the 36-year-old fighter, explained his mindset: “This is what I do, we fight. We have a license that permits extreme violence.

“I'm sure many people don't comprehend it but this is what my job is. I just enjoy what I do. Whatever happens, happens - provided that my hand is held high, that's what's important, with all due respect.”

He continued, “That's just the mentality we have to have as boxers. I don't know if other boxers think that way. Perhaps they're a bit more reserved. The way my mind works. When you're in the squared circle, it's a dangerous thing. Everything can happen.”

“You wish your adversary leaves the ring unharmed, but if they don't, you still have to go to bed aware you just did your job. It was not personal.”

Paul's Fiery Response

Jake Paul, a huge outsider in the heavyweight contest as a natural cruiserweight, was no less combative in his retort.

“This is a contemporary gladiator sport,” Paul said. “I'm ready. I want his hardest punches. I want there to be zero excuses when it's all said and done. We should kill each other.”

AJ will face his opponent, 28, at Florida's arena in a bout many see as a major mismatched contest, with some arguing it should have been approved as an exhibition bout.

The professional contest will be fought over 8 3-minute rounds using standard 10oz padded gloves, with a stipulated weight limit for Joshua.

Joshua Says He Was “Called In to Rescue” Boxing

Despite the extreme language used, the fighter said he has been “brought in to rescue” the sport of boxing.

“They want me to stop the Jake Paul phenomenon and I comprehend it and that's why I have to carry boxing on my back in this bout,” he concluded.

The event also had lighter exchanges, with Joshua laughing as his rival sang a nursery rhyme to him.

The final staredown concluded peacefully, with the underdog striking a unusual posture before Joshua remained composed and lightly grabbed Paul's chain.

Both Fighters Dismiss Scripted Claims

The peculiar aspect of this fight has led to rumors about its authenticity, including suggestions that Joshua may be restricted from scoring a knockout.

“There's nothing in the agreement, Joshua can confirm it. We're going to battle,” Paul insisted.

The former champion, wearing a expensive chain, jokingly added, “The only thing in the contract that got my interest was the payment.”

He has claimed on social media that the fight earnings will be exceptionally large.

Largest Upset in Sport's History?

Jake Paul first made his name as an online prankster, amassing a huge social media following.

He has never fought anyone of Joshua's skill level but maintained that his rival would not underestimate him.

“It's a wise move on his part,” he commented. “This could possibly be, and will be, the biggest loss of his career.”

A win for the underdog would be arguably the biggest upset in the boxing's annals.

It would undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on Joshua's legacy, but the athlete stated it would not mean retirement.

“I'd return again, move on,” he said. “I'll be main eventing again in a couple of years. It is what it is. I'm a player in the sport.”
