Biden Bowl, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Sell International Gifts for Good Cause
Relinquishing unneeded presents could be viewed as somewhat rude – unless it's done the right way.
A Charitable Sale
The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell a reported 270 presents received by her by world leaders on official trips. The eclectic collection is said to contain gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.
The collection, collectively, are valued at around €800,000. The plan is to put up for sale to the highest bidder by a Rome-based fine art auction house. A date remains to be announced, although the goal is to hold the auction by year's end, with all funds raised donated to non-profit organizations.
Storage Room Holdings
These gifts are currently locked away in a repository on the upper level of the government headquarters. Sources state that Meloni additionally planning to auction off gifts given to her predecessors that have been sitting unused over a long period.
A complete inventory has not yet been officially released, but a glimpse were revealed earlier this year when a comprehensive document of all declared gifts was submitted to lawmakers. The discussion raised if a statutory cap on gift value was being followed. Legally, a prime minister must declare presents valued above €300.
An International Assortment of Gifts
Among the items:
- A silk accessory from the leader of Albania, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A customary Indian garment from India's prime minister.
- A set of adornments from the president of Slovakia.
- A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
- A electronic pad from the leader of Ukraine.
- Artworks from the Moldovan government.
- Additional objects including cosmetics, a skateboard, and several rugs from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Possibly the strangest gifts were the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," one might note.
Political Context
Supporters have applauded Meloni, mainly from her allies, with building relationships with global statesmen and re-establishing Italy as a significant player on the international platform once again.
The forthcoming sale highlights a unconventional way to manage the protocol gifts that are collected during a leader's tenure.
