The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
