American flight controllers are increasingly looking for additional employment and calling in sick, as they continue to work unpaid amid the federal closure, the transport chief has announced.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official told a news outlet on Sunday, as certain aircraft were grounded on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

After the federal closure on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were told to keep doing their jobs without pay.

But a number have been absent, leading terminals to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has added to setbacks due to climate and other issues.

Over three thousand American flights were delayed on Sunday, and Duffy said he anticipates the situation to grow worse.

"I observe the stress," Duffy said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had spoken to multiple professionals to listen to their concerns firsthand.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I drive Uber, am I able to find another source of earnings to make ends meet?'" he added.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on the weekend, rendering it the second most extended shutdown in the past.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would slow down the number of aircraft in the air if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he would not answer directly when questioned if it was safe to travel by air in the US, and instead issued a personal plea to the professionals.

"I require my staff focused on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at their households," Duffy stated.

On Sunday, certain flights were stopped at LAX due to staffing shortages, causing disruption at the fifth most active airport in the country and among the most crowded in the world, as well as additional travel stretching upward to the metropolis of Oakland.
