A uniquely yellow-fronted residential building in the background helped us verify the footage.

We are checking images and video posted earlier today that depict the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. An investigation is under way.

Our starting point to check the location of where the pictures were from was based on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the video.

Locating additional structures, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
