She Has Amassed Numerous of Pokémon Hole Cards, and Nothing Can Halt Her.
The Pokémon Company introduced the world to the card series DP edition back in 2007, including the Bonsly card. Within this depiction, Gen IV Rock Pokémon is shown by artist Midori Harada in a somewhat awkward pose. On the card, Bonsly, which evolves into Sudowoodo can be seen fallen and weeping. However, don't mistake this, however. Similar to its attack the move Fake Tears, the little creature is trying to manipulate their opponent's emotions to lowering their damage output. Unforgettable artwork, no? Musician and harpist Hopkins certainly thinks so. And she's got a binder containing over 300 Bonsly cards to prove it.
The Full Collection and Its Highlights
However, that's not everything she has either. She's got 20 reverse holographic copies featuring Bonsly, which depicts the small Pokémon with shiny foil everywhere but the primary illustration. The most valuable item, though, is the PSA 6-graded holo reverse of Bonsly. Certainly, it's far from a high-grade Charizard from the base set. Yet, do you possess a quirky, almost perfect Bonsly illustration preserved forever immortalized? Probably not.
How It All Began
Hopkins has spent much of 2025 accumulating all available Bonsly cards from that year available on the market. She first heard about the out-of-print card earlier this year, during a discussion the most infamous cards in the compendium with an employee at a local shop. The weeping Omanyte was a contender, as was Cubone by itself in an amusement park. But it was Crying Bonsly, also known as card number 17, that grabbed Emily's focus.
Behind Bonsly's Look
The design of Bonsly is based from miniature trees, which are often grown in pots that have drainage holes. They are designed to support healthy development, to the extent that fans encourage each other to drill holes on the bottom if holes are missing. They can also be positioned on shallow pots without holes, referred to as suiban, and the collected moisture can help growers arrange their bonsai to mimic outdoor scenes. Bonsly represents the first type, thus the hole exists.
The Infamous Hole Card
Even with this reasonable background, though, The company appears somewhat excessively attentive with Bonsly's hole. Even merch including stuffed Bonsly ensure they feature a hollow cavern at the bottom of the tree-like Pokémon. It doesn't matter if the illustration of the Pokémon is weeping or at ease: It will display hole. The hole is an intrinsic part in Bonsly's appearance. Card number 71 gained meme status in collector circles because of that drainage hole, in addition to its rarity. Up until last year, this Bonsly card was the single type of Bonsly available included in the series where many of its monsters are typically depicted in dozens of different ways. Over a decade and a half, were you seeking a card of Bonsly, you had to settle with the hole version.
The Collector's Passion
"When I discovered Bonsly in the list of these cursed cards, I felt I located the one for me," Emily states in a message, noting that it was unexpected to have missed it until then. She is quick to inform you her passion for Bonsly #71 is completely useless, yet that didn't stop her. The initial interest became a major fixation, with Emily purchasing each available Bonsly card available to her. She adopted a habit of going to the nearby card store regularly, and was dubbed to the employees as the Bonsly fan. The store began reserving all incoming this specific card that came in only for her. Most of these cards are priced at one to three dollars, she mentions, approximating her total expenditure is about $400 just on the binder alone.
Market Trends and Value
Nowadays, mint-condition this Bonsly card can cost up to $14.99. Although that is expensive, run-of-the-mill copies tend to cost four dollars or more. That price increase corresponds to the time Emily began her collection in earnest, although there are probably several factors at play. While it's true that Bonsly #71 is well-known with enthusiasts, her online content regarding the card have received a huge audience. As awareness regarding Bonsly #71 expands further to new fans, it's possible that the value of these cards might increase even more. At the very least, investors note that TCG prices are soaring this year in general.
Her Relentless Pursuit
Nothing can halt her, yet.
"The amazing thing is a few followers and fans from her channel have shipped their own Bonsly cards to me for her album, and I am keeping these cards protected always," Hopkins says. Far from being alarmed, the audience are impressed and inspired by this project.
